DC Walls is part of a global festival dedicated to murals and the artists who make them. Since its founding in 2010, the festival has expanded from its origins in Hawaii and grown into a global network of artists. Secret Walls, brought back to DC for 2022, brings artists together to paint a mural before a live audience within 90 minutes. It’s raw, fast and fun! In this episode Jason reached out to Gabriel Shaffer. Gabriel is a visual artist, muralist, writer, curator, and Gallerists. Gabriel’s works rethinks rural Southern spiritualism in a realm of archetypal stories with an urban approach. He uses elements of comic book illustrations, graffiti, Native and Mesoamerican symbols through the lens of visionary/outsider art. With an accompaniment of creatures and characters, Gabriel uses these mythologies over drawings, assemblages, and paintings. Gabriel is also curator at Mortal Machine Gallery in New Orleans.
